ConstructionÂ
Station excavation and tunnelling
In February 2022, Sydney Metro awarded Gamuda Australia and Laing O’Rourke Consortium (GLC) the contract to deliver nine kilometres of twin metro rail tunnels between Westmead and Sydney Olympic Park.
At Westmead these works include:
- site establishment and demolition – installing hoarding, protecting and/or relocating utilities, conducting investigations, installing staff facilities and services to the construction site, installing piles and initial excavation
- excavating the station box – to a depth of 30 metres (approximately 10 storeys)
- excavating a crossover cavern, station cavern, cross passage and stub tunnels – using roadheaders and excavators with rock hammer attachments
- upgrading traffic safety in local streets
- retrieving two tunnel boring machines from the excavated station box
- removing excavated material – via trucks through Hawkesbury Road to Great Western Highway.
New underground cables from Parramatta substation to the future metro station at Westmead will provide a dedicated power supply for onsite equipment and machinery.
Works will include:
- non-intrusive survey work
- establishing traffic controls and construction areas
- removing concrete and asphalt with road saw
- excavating trenches and removing excavated material
- installing conduits to hold the new cables
- installing concrete pits
- backfilling and reinstating the excavated area.
