About the competition

Sydney Metro believes Sydney’s youth has what it takes to solve real challenges in Australia’s biggest public transport project. Metro Minds STEAM Challenge invites students in Year 7 to Year 10 near Sydney Metro’s City & Southwest, West and Western Sydney Airport railway alignments to work together to come up with an innovative solution to an authentic Sydney Metro challenge or opportunity.

In teams of four to six, students will work together to explore real world challenges using the design thinking process. Teachers and students have access to supporting resources including, curriculum-aligned unit of work, poster and student folio/workbook. Teams will complete the challenge in Term 2 in 2022.

New initiatives for 2022:

  • Pre-challenge webinar for students and teachers
  • Opportunity for students to pitch their ideas to a Metro Minds ambassador
  • Virtual classrooms to track student progress and check-in with experts
  • Connect students with customers via the Community hub

Each team will produce a:

  • concept briefing outlining the team’s design thinking
  • filmed video “pitch” presentation of up to five minutes that includes a design or prototype of their innovation
  • design of their innovation in a medium of choice, such as a physical model, computer design or artist impression

The best teams will be shortlisted and invited to attend a finals event to showcase their solution to the Sydney Metro team and invited guests. This will involve a team presentation and question and answer session, conducted by the judges. At the end of the event, a winner will be announced.

Take a look at the timeline for the Challenge. Team registrations close on 6 May and submissions are due on 23 June 2022.
