TBM1 Elizabeth passes 1 kilometre marker

Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) 1 Elizabeth reached her first major milestone - tunnelling the first 1 kilometre of Australia's longest railway tunnels. Elizabeth was in the ground and tunnelling four months earlier than planned, getting on with the job as quickly as possible to deliver Australia's biggest public transport project. So far, TBM1 Elizabeth has excavated more than 120,000 tonnes of rock and now travelled 1.8 kilometres from the Bella Vista tunnelling site. She is about 29 metres under Norwest Boulevard near the Reston Grange intersection, and has been averaging 120 metres per week. Elizabeth has certainly found her tunnelling groove and now it's full steam ahead towards Norwest. Recently, the ABC's Catalyst program was the first TV program to go underground on the North West Rail Link. Watch host Mark Horstman and North West Rail Link project director Rodd Staples as they check out the mega tunnelling machines digging Australia's longest railway tunnels.
