New state-of-the-art train maintenance workshop now open at Tallawong

Operations are expanding to support the maintenance of Sydney Meto’s fleet.
As the current Sydney Metro fleet matures and new trains are added for the opening of the southwest extension later this year, a new state-of-the-art train bogie overhaul workshop has opened at Tallawong.
The workshop has been purpose built to deliver the specialised heavy maintenance capabilities needed to keep metro trains at world-class standard, while creating 20 new skilled jobs in the process.
There are currently 45 trainsets that operate between Tallawong and Sydenham.
Trains that entered service during Metro’s opening in 2019 have 900,000-plus kms on the clock and half of the fleet will notch up 1.2 million kilometres in service later this year, a point at which they require their first major maintenance overhaul.
Bogies will be fully disassembled, inspected and repaired, with technicians checking key subsystems including traction motors, gearboxes, brakes and wheelsets.
Worn components such as bearings, seals and rubber elements will also be replaced before trains undergo rigorous testing ahead of returning to service.
The new workshop will primarily support Sydney Metro operations but has been designed to service compatible projects, with a Sydney Light Rail brake overhaul project already confirmed.
