Congratulations to Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta, winners of the 2022 Metro Minds STEAM Challenge.

The Metro Minds STEAM Challenge invites students in Year 7 to Year 10 near Sydney Metro’s City & Southwest, West and Western Sydney Airport railway alignments to work together to come up with an innovative solution to an authentic Sydney Metro challenge or opportunity.

They took on real project roles, employed the design thinking process, and worked with Sydney Metro ambassadors to refine their ideas.

The challenge was undertaken by 31 teams from 12 schools. Five finalist teams were shortlisted and invited to pitch their innovation to a judging panel and a live audience of over 70 people at the International Convention Centre Sydney.

The winning team from Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta presented an innovative idea to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands which Sydney Metro operates on, including announcements on trains and at stations as well as the installation of plaques and digital Indigenous artworks.

The other finalist included students from Sefton High School, Sydney Secondary College, Lucas Heights Community School and Cranbrook High School.

The student teams produced a concept brief, video pitch and design of their innovation, then presented them to Sydney Metro.
