This is the first look inside Sydney Metro’s Martin Place construction site with work well underway to deliver Sydney’s new world-class metro system.
Sydney Metro is using state-of-the-art equipment to help reduce the impact of work - pulverisers and concrete shears attached to excavators will work to crush and cut away at buildings, significantly reducing the noise levels generated by traditional hydraulic hammering.
Excavators have been craned more than 50 metres to the top of buildings, from where they have been safely demolishing from the top down.
Six buildings will be removed at Martin Place to make way for the new Martin Place Station, with major demolition work scheduled to finish by the end of next year.
Work is already well underway on the 21-storey building at 55 Hunter Street, which is now down to level 15. Preparation is underway at two buildings on Elizabeth Street and one on Castlereagh Street – the next three to be removed.
The Martin Place Station site will be excavated up to 27 metres below ground to where the new twin metro rail tunnels will be built.
The first of five mega tunnel boring machines will be in the ground before the end of next year to excavate the 15.5 kilometre long tunnels.
Once complete, Martin Place will be one of 31 Sydney Metro stations on this new 66km railway.
Sydney Metro services start in the first half of 2019 on the Sydney Metro Northwest project, with metro rail to be extended in 2024 under Sydney Harbour, through the CBD and beyond to Bankstown.
