Customers at Central Station can now enjoy all the benefits the landmark new Central Walk concourse has to offer, with the remaining section of the underground pedestrian link now open.

Delivered as part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, a total of 15 new escalators and four new lifts branch off Central Walk, connecting customers to suburban rail platforms.

The 80-metre-long and 19-metre-wide will give customers a fast and direct route to platforms, trains, buses, light rail, and metro services in 2024.

Central Walk will cater to future customer demand at the station, which is expected to more than double in the next two decades.

The construction of the walkway is an engineering feat delivered below eight platforms where trains remained operational throughout. More than 7,000 tiles and 500 lights were also installed as part of construction and 38,000 tonnes of rock were removed, which is the equivalent of six Olympic swimming pools.

With Central Walk now open, additional focus will be on putting the final touches on the new metro platforms 27-metres below the station, and getting the north-south concourse ready for opening.

New service connection and installation work is continuing within the construction site at 20-38 Chalmers Street, which will create a new entrance to Central Station.

Sydney Metro services will start at Central Station in 2024 when the first stage of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line from Chatswood to Sydenham commences passenger services.
