Dulwich Hill Station Plaza opens as Southwest Metro transformation continues with Sydney’s next big active transport link
16.02.2026
Sydney’s newest active transport link will run the full length of the Southwest extension of the M1 line and opened for tender this morning.
Southwest Metro is delivering more than fast, reliable transport, it is creating great new places for communities between Sydenham and Bankstown, with locals also benefiting from the opening of a vibrant new public plaza at Dulwich Hill Station today.
Delivered as part of the city-shaping Southwest Metro project, the 1,200-square-metre Dulwich Hill Station Plaza strengthens connections between bus services in the nearby village centre, Dulwich Hill Light Rail and future metro services due to start in the second half of the year.
Designed as more than a thoroughfare, the plaza features sandstone seating, new lighting and landscaping, creating a safe, accessible and welcoming place for the community to enjoy.
Running alongside the plaza is the future alignment of the South West Active Transport Link (SWATL) dubbed the ‘MetroWay’ during design and delivery. This shared path will stretch 13.8-kilometres and run parallel to the Southwest Metro.
MetroWay will connect new metro stations with existing and planned cycling networks and will be designed for people of all ages and riding abilities.
The pedestrian and cycle route will include trees, integrated public art, rest stops, lighting, clear wayfinding and join to more than 350 bike parking spaces at southwest stations, encouraging more people to leave the car at home.
The SWATL contract will go to tender on 17 February and is expected to be awarded by the end of the year. The new greenway is due for completion by the end of 2028.
