Bankstown Station’s brand-new transit interchange and community precinct opened to the public on Sunday 22 March, 2026.

Linked by a new 90-metre, tree lined plaza area, the new precinct prioritises seamless and accessible interchanges, with the centralised walkway branching off to buses, trains, three new Kiss-and-Ride parking spaces and later this year modern new metro services.

In a major win for Bankstown locals, the plaza area also creates a new direct pedestrian thoroughfare linking Bankstown’s north and south sides, a connection that stitches the town centre together with residential areas and boosts foot traffic for local businesses.

A second Sydney Trains entrance building provides direct access from the plaza to services on the T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line. The new entry features a modern ticket gateline with nine new opal gates and 18 secure bike parking spaces.

At the southern end of the new precinct sits the new metro station, which is in its final stages of construction. The station, including new entrance building, will open once Southwest Metro services start in the second half of the year.

Much more than a transport interchange, the new precinct has been designed as a welcoming space for the community to enjoy. Spaces have been future-proofed for dining and retail opportunities, there’s new lighting, shaded seating, modern concrete benches and timber decking beneath the iconic 150-year-old fig tree.

The opening was celebrated with live drumming, information stalls and children’s activities, giving locals their first taste of Bankstown’s metro future and the precinct’s new role as Southwest Sydney’s premier transport hub.

The opening follows the largest upgrade to the station precinct since the station opened in 1909.  The new precinct and station entrance buildings were constructed over 1.5 years with 1,942 workers on site to deliver the significant transformation.

Constructing the precinct required removal of more than 50 metres of the former Sydney Trains platform and significant work to realign the Sydney Trains tracks to allow access to both platforms from the new entrance.

When metro services begin, Bankstown will have reduced travel times into and north of the city centre, including:
•    Bankstown to Gadigal: around 30 minutes (15 minutes faster)
•    Bankstown to Central: around 28 minutes (six minutes faster)
•    Bankstown to Chatswood: around 43 minutes (25 minutes faster)
•    Bankstown to Macquarie University: around 54 minutes (25 minutes faster)
