Waterloo Station has crossed the construction finish line to be the first station complete on the new city section of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project.

After more than four years of major work to transform the 25-metre-deep station box into a brand-new station, construction is complete. The next step is to hand the station over to network operators, Metro Trains Sydney (MTS).

Once handed over, the station will undergo final preparations, with the operator undertaking a range of testing and commissioning exercises and scenarios at the station before it opens.

Waterloo Station is the first out of six new stations on the city section to complete its extensive construction program. Remaining stations are following close behind and will be handed over progressively.

It took more than 5,000 people a total of five million work hours to complete the new station which will welcome its first passengers soon.

Major work at the station has involved extensive archaeological investigations that led to the discovery of more than 18,000 mostly 18th century artefacts, excavation of 330,000 tonnes of material to build the station box and the breakthrough of two tunnel boring machines.

Around 18,800 passengers will pass through Waterloo Station each day once it opens, as the station precinct includes a new plaza, pedestrian walkway, bike parking and new pedestrian crossings.

When metro services begin this year, Waterloo Station will provide fast, safe and reliable journeys to Central in two minutes, Barangaroo in eight minutes and to Victoria Cross in North Sydney in 11 minutes.
