Sydney Metro West on track with first rail delivery

The rail that will form the 24 kilometre twin metro tracks for the city-shaping Sydney Metro West line has arrived on site at Sydney Olympic Park, marking a major milestone in the next stage of delivery for the mega project.
A total of 5,316 tonnes (equivalent in weight almost 900 African Elephants) of rail has been delivered and lifted into the 200-metre-long, 37-metre-wide, and 27-metre-deep station box where the future Sydney Olympic Metro station will be built.
A precision lifting process is required to manoeuvre 4,376 individual pieces of steel, each 20 metres in length, from the surface to the station floor.
A team of 20 skilled workers will spend the next three months welding the rail together into 120m lengths. The rail will progressively be moved into the tunnels using a specialised road-rail vehicle excavator, where it will be stored, ready for installation.
Preparing and storing the rail ahead of the commencement of station construction activities ensures uninterrupted access once track installation works begin.
An additional shipment of rail will follow for the nine kilometres of service track connecting the main metro line to the Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility.
A total of 60 kilometres of track will be installed within the twin tunnels and the Clyde Stabling and Maintenance Facility. The delivery and preparation of the rail forms the first major piece of work for the Linewide program being delivered by John Holland. This involves the complete fit-out of tunnels, cross passages, caverns, and stations, as well as the delivery of key operational facilities and rail systems across the entire alignment.
Once the rail is stored inside the tunnels, the team will begin preparations to build the concrete base on which the tracks will sit, followed by the start of electrical and mechanical fit-out by the end of 2026. Track installation will begin in the first half of 2027.
