Going deep at Hunter Street Station Community Day!

Nearly 550 community members had an opportunity to tour the cavern of Sydney Metro's landmark Hunter Street Station, marking the first time the public experience the behemoth space where the future station will be constructed.
It took a team 20 months to carve out the station cavern, an expansive 25 metre wide, 180 metre long and 15 metres high space beneath the heart of the Sydney CBD. The cavern excavation removed around 257,000 tonnes of material, much of which was repurposed for use on other NSW construction projects.
Crews then installed waterproofing, steel reinforcement and constructed the cavern formwork before pouring more than 30,000 cubic metres of concrete to form the station structural shell. Remaining work is now reaching 95 per cent completion, with final concrete works for the permanent tunnel lining and plenum structures to be completed before the site is handed over to station builders Lendlease later this year.
Above ground, entrances will be located on the corner of George and Hunter streets and on the corner of O’Connell and Bligh streets. The station will anchor two towers, a 58-storey building above Hunter Street Station East and a 51-storey building above Hunter Street Station West, creating a major new transport and commercial hub in the city centre.
The station will feature 32 escalators and 11 lifts as well as a direct pedestrian connection to the metro platforms and M1 line services at Martin Place, improving connectivity across the Sydney Metro network.
