The biggest crane lift of a railway station canopy has been safely completed on the Sydney Metro Northwest project.

The 60 tonne gum leaf canopy was lifted into place at Hills Showground Station – one of 13 metro stations opening next year.

It was the largest lift of a canopy on the project.

The leaves were assembled on the ground over three weeks and then lifted into position by a 500-tonne crane.

Over coming weeks, roofing, glass and timber panels will be installed to complete the canopy.

The canopy is 41 metres long and rises 11 metres above the concourse level.

The iconic canopy design was inspired by the local blue gum leaf.
