More milestones have been reached on Sydney Metro, with construction underway on the first station platform at Cudgegong Road and tenders called for tunnelling under Sydney Harbour.

The frame of the first platform is in place at Cudgegong Road, which is one of 31 metro stations along the 66 kilometre route.

The Cudgegong Road Station platform is 187 metres long and 9 metres wide and will service a train every four minutes in the peak. The station will also have 1,000 commuter car parking spaces.

The construction milestone comes as two shortlisted consortia have been invited to tender to build the twin metro tunnels under Sydney Harbour. They are:

  • Ferrovial, Acciona and BAM Joint Venture, and
  • John Holland, CPB and Ghella Joint Venture.

The successful tenderer for the Sydney Metro City & Southwest Tunnel and Station Excavation contract will be responsible for carrying out the tunnelling and station excavations, including tunnelling from Chatswood, under Sydney Harbour and across the Central Business District (CBD).

When Sydney Metro is extended into the CBD and beyond in 2024, there will be ultimate capacity for a metro train every two minutes in each direction under the city.

The NSW Government expects to award the contract to build the tunnels around the middle of next year.
